A Place of Worship, Healing & History
St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya is one of the most sacred and historic Roman Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of Colombo. With over a century of rich history, it has been a spiritual home for thousands of Catholics living in and around Negombo.
Our church stands not only as a house of God but as a symbol of enduring faith, love, and hope — especially in the face of adversity. It is a place where the community gathers to pray, celebrate the sacraments, and find comfort in God’s presence.
Faith Tested, Faith Restored – The Easter Sunday Tragedy
On April 21, 2019, during the joyous celebration of Easter Mass, our beloved church was the site of a devastating terrorist attack.
Over 100 faithful parishioners lost their lives, and many more were injured in one of the most tragic moments in Sri Lankan history. The attack shook the foundations of our church — both physically and spiritually.

Yet, in the aftermath, something extraordinary happened. Rather than surrendering to hatred, our community came together in unity, prayer, and forgiveness. We rebuilt not just our church, but our spirit. Today, St. Sebastian’s Church stands stronger than ever — a living memorial to the lives we lost, and a beacon of hope for the future.
We invite you to learn more about the Easter Sunday Attack and how the grace of God continues to guide us forward.
