A Brief History
The foundation of St. Sebastian’s Church dates back to the early 20th century, when the Catholic community in Negombo was rapidly expanding. As the fishing town of Negombo grew, so did the need for a new place of worship for the faithful in Katuwapitiya.
The original structure was modest but served as a spiritual home for hundreds. Over time, with the dedication of parish priests and parishioners, the church was developed into a magnificent structure – blending classical architecture with spiritual elegance. Beautiful stained glass windows, intricate altars, and statues of saints made it not just a house of prayer, but a work of sacred art.
Through the decades, St. Sebastian’s Church has been a center of spiritual formation, hosting baptisms, weddings, first communions, confirmations, and funerals. It has also served as a beacon of education, charity, and community leadership within the Catholic Diocese of Negombo.
